"Digital Interfacial Expressions" is a compilation of notated compositions produced through midi (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) technology by Charles Rice Goff III and various members of the Taped Rugs family between 1998 and 2007. Each piece in this collection possesses unique compositional qualities; however, the influences of 20th Century Classical composition, Dadaism, Electronic Music, and the Avant Garde are all showcased to varying degrees.
Both mp3 audio files and the original midi files from which the mp3s were created are contained in this archive. Because the sounds of midi files vary depending on the type of computer sound card used during playback, these files likely will have different sonic qualities from the mp3s archived here. None of the mp3 files archived here has ever previously been made available to the public.
Some specifics:
1 "Two Ton Mint" was composed by Goff and Stuart Sands while Sands was visiting Goff in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1998.
2 "August Eighth" was composed by Goff and Stuart Sands by exchanging files via email in 2000.
3 "Lush" was composed by Goff and Eric Matchett by exchanging files via email in 2000.
4 "Strum," "Turning The Boat Around," and "Gasoline & Gravy" were composed by Goff and Killr "Mark" Kaswan by exchanging files via email from 2000-2001.
5 "Mikles" and "August Nineteenth" were composed by Goff and Michael Adams by exchanging files via email in 2001.
6 "Miracle" was composed by Goff and Robert Silverman while Silverman was visiting Goff in Lawrence, Kansas, in 2005.
7 "Buzz Six" was composed by Goff for the 2001 cassette album entitled: "Of Rancor & Rhyme," on which Goff collaborated with the ever-enigmatic entity known to the world as "Buzzsaw." Buzzsaw did not incorporate the piece into the cassette album. Several of the other pieces that Goff composed for the project were released by Goff on his 2001 cassette album: "Absolutely Lumpy," but "Buzz Six" was not included in that collection either.
8 Goff composed "Distance" in 2001 and later used it as the soundtrack for the video entitled: "Ohio Street," which was included in Goff's 2004 video compilation: "Panaramania."
9 Goff composed "Fodder" and "How To Cut Kabocha" while collaborating with Don Campau in 2004. Campau never worked with "Fodder," so Goff later incorporated a portion of it into the soundtrack for the video entitled: "Celluloid Heroines," which was included on his 2005 video compilation: "Byting The Ram On The Big Digit."
Campau modified "How To Cut Kabocha" (Campau's title) and released the results on his 2005 CDR album: "Pen Pals 3." In 2009, Ken Clinger modified the midi file of "How To Cut Kabocha" and released the results on his CDR album: "KC Collab 25."
10 "Pianos Envy" was composed by Goff during the production of the "Byting The Ram On The Big Digit" video compilation, but it was never used in the project.
11 "No Complicated Pockets" is an out take version of a midi composition which served as a component of a song on Goff's 2005 CDR album: "Beaten & Pureed."
11 "Hyway Hypnosis," "Flight Of The Dresses," and "Zippotetti Machetti" were composed by Goff while he was producing soundtracks for his "Dada For The 21st Century" video compilation in 2006. "Hyway Hypnosis" was modified for the video entitled: "Enroute." The other two pieces were used in their original forms and got their names from the videos which they accompany.
12 "Page One," "Page Two," and "Page Three" were produced by Goff to accompany web pages that he produced for a Dada project, entitled: "Exploritorium," hosted by Justynn Tyme and Dada Yow in 2007. The artwork included in this archive was produced as part of this project.
